![]() ![]() Google Docs has recently been suggested as an efficient collaborative tool for group writing. Our results suggest that Google Docs was a useful tool for collaborative writing and influenced student learning. We found (1) most students were unfamiliar with Google Docs prior to the study, (2) Google Docs changed the means of communication used in collaborative writing, (3) 93% of students considered Google Docs a useful tool for group work, (4) using Google Docs had no effect on students' paper grades, and (5) half of the students reported they would like to use Google Docs in the future. We compared students' collaborative performance and learning across two assignments, one with Google Docs and one without. Undergraduate students (N = 35) were randomly assigned to small groups to complete two out-of-class assignments. Goals of this study include (1) assessing the effectiveness of using Google Docs in an out-of-class collaborative writing activity through measuring the assignment's influence on students' learning experiences, (2) teaching students to work collaboratively, and (3) teaching students to successfully communicate their understanding and application of concepts through writing. However, many college instructors and students lack knowledge to effectively use Google Docs to enhance teaching and learning. Google Docs, an online word processing application, is a promising tool for collaborative learning. Keywords: fluency perceptions composition measurement collaborative writing peers In general, English teachers should consider implementing collaborative writing with the help of technology in their English classes so that students benefit from all the advantages of collaborative writing and at the same time create a comfortable environment where students can improve their English writing by learning from their peers. In the same way, the quantitative results revealed that there are a greater number of words, clauses, and sentences in collaboratively written compositions. ![]() The qualitative results of this study showed that the perceptions of the students towards collaborative writing were positive in the social, psychological and academic areas. ![]() The quantitative approach consisted of an analysis of the measurement of the total number of words in both essays, individual and collaborative. The instruments for data collection were focus group interviews, a questionnaire with closed questions and the essays made by the students. This mixed method research handles qualitative and quantitative data. The sample in this study was 33 students of the second level of English from a public university in Ecuador. Also, determine whether writing fluency regarding the total number of words is higher in collaborative writing than in individual writing.
